The paper publishes and analyses as-yet-unpublished documents concerning an anthology on memory in literature, assembled by Gesualdo Bufalino and held in the archive of the Comiso Foundation. The unpublished anthology is accompanied by a letter to Elvira Sellerio, in which Bufalino explains its structure and choices, and by a series of eccentric texts that all revolve around the theme of memory. The work of Gesualdo Bufalino relies on a permanent dialogue with the great modernist models of European fiction. A whole network of allusions, innuendos and micro-quotations from the great novels of Mann, Kafka, Proust, Musil, Joyce, Woolf, is scattered among the pages of Diceria dell’untore, a novel which was conceived as a “serious game” using previous textual materials and recombining them in order to create a new architecture of meaning. The essay reflects on the lexical dissemination of terms belonging to the metaphorical area of 'recovery,' 'rebirth,' and 'rediscovery' in Bufalino's work beginning with Diceria dell'untore, in order to try to demonstrate the legacy of a private experience, the one related to the writing of his dissertation during the years of war and illness, in the transfigured one of literary reworking.

L’articolo prende in esame l’attività svolta da Silvio Ferri presso l’Università di Palermo negli anni del secondo conflitto mondiale, quando ricoprì l’insegnamento di Archeologia e Storia dell’Arte greca e romana e diresse l’Istituto di Archeologia, tra non pochi disagi e difficoltà causati dagli eventi del periodo bellico. Durante l’ultimo anno di insegnamento (1945-1946), prima del definitivo trasferimento a Pisa, ebbe tra i suoi laureandi Gesualdo Bufalino, la cui tesi è stata ritrovata durante la nuova sistemazione dell’Archivio dell’Ateneo palermitano.
